Operator Trainer

Position Summary

As a member of the Human Resources (HR) team reporting to the Human Resources Manager, the Operator Trainer ensures the efficient daily operation of multiple production and/or finishing lines in a high speed, high volume manufacturing environment by ensuring that Operators have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the assigned job tasks.
In this role, the Operator Trainer is responsible for the execution of the Company s training and career path program for hourly operators, updating training materials to correspond with new procedures and monitoring activities and performance on the manufacturing floor to meet safety, quality and production design goals in addition to cost objectives, as well as, promoting a strong team atmosphere.

Position Responsibilities

Actively executing the Company s operator training program to ensure each team member is able to perform the functions of his or her role to meet or exceed the Company s safety, quality and operational standards by:
(40%)

  • Working with all team members that are new in position to ensure both the understanding of the requirements of the position and the expectations of the training / Skill Based System (SBS) Initiative;
  • Assessing training needs and developing and implementing plans to meet those needs;
  • Coordinating training efforts with team members who are new in position, Supervisors, and Leads to ensure that skills are obtained in a timely manner;
  • Administering On-the-Job assessments and testing and making recommendations regarding the certification or removal of certification of skills within a particular area;
  • Partnering with the HR Manager and Department Managers to provide support to supervisors to administer the career path program and ensure career path discussions are completed in a timely manner and according to the Company s designed schedule;
  • Partnering with Department Managers and Supervisors to ensure all training is kept up to date and that the team member s performance is meeting or exceeding Company standards;
  • Maintaining accurate information and records in the SBS Database;
  • Providing the tools and resources necessary for team members who are new in position or ready to move into a new position to ensure that productivity is optimized;
  • Ensuring all training files are kept up to date;
  • Acting as mentor/partner for new team members to ensure effective on boarding, for example, showing them break rooms, bathrooms, and truly introducing them to the culture of the Company; and
  • Partnering with the Department Managers, Human Resources team, and Supervisors in succession planning for the manufacturing floor.

  • Recognizing employees for exceptional performance in all aspects of the business;

  • Enforcing all company policies;
  • Promoting training and career opportunities, such as Level 2 certifications in all positions, for all team members;
  • Partnering with Supervisors and Department Managers to review each team member s career track with them once a quarter, and ensuring that they have the tools, resources, and skills to progress in a timely manner:
  • Communicating with team members daily, to address training needs and anticipate potential issues or concerns;
  • Communicating with leaders and team members regularly on the issues of job performance and expectations; and
  • Being fair, consistent, and objective including always praising in public and reprimanding in private.

Actively supporting the plant safety programs by:

  • Promoting a safety conscious culture through actions and accountability;
  • Identifying and correcting hazards in the plant, both safety and environmental;
  • Holding individuals accountable for work area and general plant housekeeping; and
  • Partnering with the Safety Department to conduct safety orientation.

Providing knowledge to team members to enable them to understand required conformance of material being produced to meet or exceed the 98% 1st pass quality standard by:

  • Ensuring all employees are properly trained on quality specifications and are accurately using testing equipment;
  • Actively pursuing and correcting issues that negatively affect the quality of the product;
  • Promoting a quality conscious culture through actions; and
  • Working with the Quality Coordinator to ensure all training manuals are up to date on product specifications.

Understanding and transferring the knowledge of the waste, speed and delay design for each product on each machine to new team members by:

  • Becoming engaged in the production run plan to properly train and communicate with team members when needed;
  • Making suggestions to improve processes that impact productivity;
  • Properly training team members on clean ups and changeovers to best utilize resources and maximize efficiency;
  • Training team members on all downtime events as needed to target 95% plus time to efficiency (TTE), this would include but not be limited to, wash ups, product changeovers, size changeovers and unscheduled downtime; and
  • Developing employees to understand design throughput gaps and improve TTE.

Actively pursuing opportunities to reduce costs and meet the site yield expectation of 95% or higher by:
(10%)

  • Training employees to reduce rejects to below 2%;
  • Looking for opportunities to reduce training and administrative / supply costs;
  • Training employees to understand the benefit of reducing interleaver usage by managing an effective plan to eliminate transit damage; and
  • Working with Supervisors/Department Managers to effectively manage overtime (OT) at or below 18% through effective scheduling of training and optimizing productivity of team members.

Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Required:

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively take action to solve problems while exhibiting sound judgment and successful stress tolerance.
  • Demonstrated ability to present information in a way that it is understood and assimilated by others, including team members at all levels in the Organization.
  • Proven knowledge of manufacturing processes, procedures, and standards and the ability to communicate and teach that information to others.
  • Ability to assess and / or address gaps in knowledge and skills with operators, leads, and Supervisors.
  • Demonstrated ability to act independently upon information and make decisions that achieve optimal results.
  • Strong interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills (bilingual in Spanish a plus).
  • Demonstrated intermediate skills with the standard features of various personal computer word processing and spreadsheet software (Microsoft Word and Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet, and other proprietary software).
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and get results through the actions of others.
  • Demonstrated ability to think ahead and plan over a 90-day time span including preparing and implementing action plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to measure a team member s performance to pre-established goals and standards.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks and prioritize workload while paying attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to function as a strong team player.

Education/
Experience:

Required:

  • Bachelor s Degree (preferred / not required).
  • 2 or more years experience in a high-speed manufacturing environment as an Operator Trainer or related role.
    Supervisory or Lead experience helpful.
  • Well developed interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills (bilingual in Spanish a plus).
  • Must be very organized and have good Intermediate PC skills
