Job Summary

The Senior Infection Preventionist (IP) is a highly experienced Infection Preventionist with an exceptional skill set and knowledge in a variety infection prevention practices throughout the spectrum of care. The Senior IP will work on a broad and diverse portfolio of enterprise-wide infection prevention projects requiring the ability to flex their communication and leadership style. The Senior IP will be expected to utilize improvement methodology to lead or support multiple projects at a time. The Senior IP will serve as a strategic thought partner and be able to represent infection prevention and control internally and externally.

This position requires specialized expertise, knowledge and skills in infection prevention and epidemiology. The Senior IP must be detail, action, solution and results oriented. The Senior IP must demonstrate foresight and mature judgement in managing a portfolio of infection prevention projects. The Senior IP must have the ability to influence change and work as a team player across a complex, ever-changing healthcare system environment.

The Senior IP is capable of serving as a trainer and mentor to less experienced team members.

Job Responsibilities

Effort The expectation is that time spent on projects will be:

  1. 50% Technical (leading and performing technical aspects of IP duties/projects)
  2. 20% Strategic (Planning and Guidance)
  3. 30% Transferring Knowledge (Teaching, Coaching and Mentoring)

1. Technical Infection prevention program activities

  • Performs healthcare associated infection prevention surveillance
  • Tracks infection trends and escalates findings with suggestions for immediate response
  • Leads the planning and response to outbreak investigations and exposures in collaboration with public health authorities and clinical and operational leaders
  • Conducts regular rounding and provides just in time feedback to healthcare workers across the spectrum of care
  • Performs and supports root cause analysis to identify modifiable risk factors and recommends solutions to improve care
  • Provides infection prevention expertise to multidisciplinary enterprise committees (e.g. evaluation of new products, environment of care)
  • Plans, leads and participates in improvement activities to prevent healthcare associated infections (HAIs) and improve infection prevention practices across the health system

2. Technical - Change Management

  • Works independently across the enterprise to effectively engage employees in an open dialogue and other activities to address resistance and build commitment to change
  • Demonstrates solid facilitation, influence and collaboration skills
  • Strategizing with team members to determine activities or interventions to create change and develop communication strategies to support change
  • Presents strong analytic, problem solving and change management skills

3. Technical - Team Facilitation

  • Actively influences healthcare professionals from across disciplines to drive performance improvement and impact quality and patient safety
  • Effectively builds and facilitates projects with clearly defined goals, roles and responsibilities and manages dysfunctional team behaviors when observed
  • Builds effective sponsorship and process ownership (Accountability)
  • Uses independent judgement and discretion in assembling stakeholders and sponsors

4. Strategic

  • Partners with leadership in assessing risk and establishing strategy for improving infection prevention practices with a direct focus on embedding highly reliable practices across the health system
  • Serves as a liaison between clinical and operational leadership and infection prevention leadership by maintaining ongoing and direct communications related to compliance, challenges and performance
  • Cultivates ongoing partnerships and serves as an infection prevention expert on industry trends and benchmarks

5. Building Organizational Capability

  • Plans, coordinates, and provides formal and just in time training on IP education
  • Demonstrates understanding of adult learning principles
  • Provides coaching and consultation on the use of improvement methodology in IP
  • Serves as leader on the Infection Prevention team with a focus on coaching, mentoring and building capability across team members

6. Patient Safety/Accreditation/Regulatory

  • Supports regulatory and accreditation activities, including participation in Joint Commission and Department of Health surveys and accreditation readiness
  • Develops, reviews, implements, and maintains infection prevention policies and procedures
  • Facilitates multidisciplinary risk assessments to identify gaps in infection prevention and control and areas of priority
  • Works with leaders and staff to embed Safety Behaviors for Error Prevention into practice

7. Other duties as assigned.

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

CIC - Cert in Infection Control

Required Education and Experience

Required Education:
Bachelor degree in nursing, or other similar bachelor s degree in a health-care related field, from an accredited program.

Required
Experience:

  • At least seven (7) years of professional experience
  • At least five (5) years as an infection preventionist

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Master s degree

  • Prior experience demonstrating leadership skills to achieve expected results.
  • Program management experience
  • Clinical experience
  • Knowledge of data collection, data management and reporting
  • At least five (5) years as an infection preventionist with experience across the spectrum of healthcare environments.


Preferred Licenses/certificates/registrations:

  • Lean Six Sigma or other improvement training
  • Fellow of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (FAPIC)

Additional Technical Requirements

  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing cross-functional work teams with no direct reporting relationship.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative when necessary.
  • Ability to work well with others, and be detail oriented with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to work under stress and deliver on deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Requires a high degree of flexibility of thinking, skills and hours.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Visio.
