This is an interdisciplinary position with a positive education requirement. You must meet the education requirements for at least one of the professional series below:
Basic Requirement:
For Mining Engineer:
A. I have a bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering that included curriculum accredited by ABET; OR that included differential and integral calculus AND courses in five (5) of the following areas of engineering science or physics:
(1) statics/dynamics; (2) strength of materials; (3) fluid mechanics/hydraulics; (4) thermodynamics; (5) electrical optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics or electronics. I will provide a copy of my college transcript; OR B. I have a combination of education and experience including engineering coursework in physical and mathematical science and experience in one of the branches of engineering AND I have one (1) of the following:
professional engineer registration; (2) passed the EIT examination or similar state examination; (3) completed 60 semester hours of coursework specified in the basic requirement above; (4) completed a bachelor's degree in a related field AND have 1 year or more of professional engineering experience. For Geologist:
A. I have successfully completed a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in the field of Geology plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. I will provide a copy of my college transcript; OR B. I have a combination of education and experience equivalent to a major in geology or related disciplines appropriate to the position advertised. In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples:

In addition to meeting the basic requirements, I have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-12 in the Federal service:
Specialized experience is further defined as (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-12) in the federal service. At this level, experience is referred to as working with solid minerals (locatable and saleable mineral programs), reviewing mine plans for technical soundness and for compliance with regulation, dealing with appeals and litigation, coordinating with other entities, etc. For Geologist:
In addition to meeting the basic requirements, I have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-12 in the Federal service:
Specialized experience requires in addition to meeting the basic education requirement you must have one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-12) in the federal service. At this level, geologists serve as senior technical experts performing work involving technical problems, methods, and data that are highly incomplete, controversial, or uncertain. Recommendations and conclusions are accepted as sound and work is reviewed only for meeting fiscal constraints, coordination with others and attainment of objectives. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. Physical Demands:
The work is mostly sedentary, but field trips, tours, inspections, and meetings often require walking, climbing, and camping out. Work requires periods of concentration, after-hours preparation for staff and program guidance, and ability to deal effectively with several diverse issues concurrently. Work Environment:
Work is mainly performed in an office setting with occasional conferences or meetings scheduled elsewhere where other accommodations are used. However, there is some field work which will involve driving or walking over rough terrain with wide temperature variations ranging from below freezing to over 100 degrees F. Physiological and mental requirements of the work are demanding and stressful due to the controversial nature of the solid minerals issues/conflicts involved and the resolution of the complex issues/conflicts between BLM offices, State and Federal agencies, mineral industry interests and other affected interests. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
